子供の頃、故郷の小さな動物園にパンダがやってきて、町中大騒ぎになった。
両親が張り切って親戚呼び寄せて、みんなで動物園にパンダを見に行った。
なんでこんな小さな動物園にパンダが？と子供ながらに不思議に思ったが、
パンダが見られるという期待が大きく、そんな思いはどこかへ吹き飛んでいた。

いとこ達と連れ立ってパンダについた。狭いところで、パンダが可哀想だと思った。
親が「小さいパンダなんだって」と言った。「やっぱり大きいパンダは無理だよね。」
「ううん。」私は首を振った。小さくたって、パンダはパンダだ。手を繋いだ弟の手に力が入った。

そして、岩陰から顔を出したのは、　　・・・タヌキだった。

胸がチクチクした。泣くまいと必死にこらえたけど、涙が頬を伝わった。
突然、弟が声を上げて泣き出した。

「パンダがいいよう、パンダが見たいよう」

両親が必死になだめる。「あれはパンダだよ。レッサーパンダって言うんだよ。」
嘘だ。あれはタヌキだ。私もこらえきれず泣き出してしまった。
いとこたちや近くの子供たちもいっせいに泣き始め、そこら一体が地獄絵図になった。

後で係りのお姉さんが風船とアメをくれた。
